Kitakami Tenshochi Park, Iwate Prefecture ・Tenshochi Park has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 sites for viewing cherry blossoms. ・Stroll through the cherry blossom tunnel made up of 10,000 cherry trees that runs for 2km along the Kitakami River. ・The flowers are celebrated with a festival with lots of stalls selling food, local products and souvenirs. ・Best time to visit: Mid to late April 3. Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture ・Known as the 'Little Kyoto' due to its rich history and culture having been a former castle town and Samurai stronghold. ・Explore the well-preserved samurai district with the hundreds of blooming weeping cherry trees adding to the already special atmosphere. ・Approximately 1 million people visit the cherry blossom festival. ・Best time to visit: Late April~Early May ....and one more place! The Rock-Breaking Cherry Tree ・Located in Morioka, the capital of Iwate prefecture, this giant single cherry tree with a diameter of 1.35m grows out of a crack in a huge granite boulder. It is estimated to be around 380 years old.
